We have Gennaro Fabbri and his wife, Rachele, to thank for its creation. The Amarena cherry, a variety of \u003cem\u003ePrunus cerasus \u003c\/em\u003e(a black sour cherry) grows wild in Bologna and Modena. His wife took the opportunity to pick these cherries and cook them in sugar, in copper pots. Gennaro liked the candied cherries so much he bought a blue and white ceramic jar for his wife as a thank you present.
